FA Cup First Qualifying Round

Wimborne were the hosts and the wise money was not on a repeat of the previous time the sides met in the FA Cup. Back in 1997 Tivvy welcomed the Magpies to Ladysmead and sent them on their way with an 11-1 defeat to mull over. A few months later we had won an FA Vase game in Dorset 4-0, but this meeting proved to be a much tighter affair, with Wimborne giving as good as they got from a Tivvy side two levels further up the non-league pyramid. Nathan Rudge struck the woodwork in the early stages and Tivvy’s marginal edge was rewarded when Bobby Hopkinson netted from a smartly worked free kick after twenty minutes or so.

Paul Wyatt had a shot well saved, Tom Knighton missed the target, and Wimborne pressed in search of an equaliser as the game wore on. Kevin James was denied by Steve Book having jinked into a shooting position, Danny Gibbons nodded a header the wrong side of the goalpost, and Steve Whitcher bobbled a weak effort goalwards that was easily fielded. Tiverton offered little going forward but on the whole they didn’t need to - the defence stood firm, and goal difference has no meaning in cup ties. If there was one cause for concern it was an injury picked up by James Fraser that forced him out of the action at half time, but on the whole it was a case of job done. Tiverton now face Bracknell Town in the next round, the first meeting between the clubs.

Cries of “sack the kitman!” Tivvy arrived in Wimborne Minster with their white away strip, not the logical choice when playing a team that play in black and white stripes. Luckily Wimborne were kind enough to lend their (conveniently) yellow second kit. It must be said that yellow shirts and white shorts look naff!
