Tiverton Town 3 - 4 Kingstonian

Friday 23/07/1999   Team Talk Challenge Cup
Nigel Davis

What an excellent game this turned out to be. Tivvy found themselves up against a very quick and very impressive Kingstonian side showing‚ clearly‚ why they are the F.A. Trophy holders and among the favourites to win the Conference. Tivvy led 3 - 2 at half time through two goals from Richard Pears and a maiden goal scored by Steve Ovens. Pears´ first (15 mins) was a 20 yard stunner that left the Kingstonian keeper Steve Farrelly‚ off his line‚ with no chance. Pears´ second (39mins) was a looping header from almost as far following a superb crossfield ball from Paul Tatterton and Steve Ovens´ goal (42mins) was a superb opportunist quick reaction header from Steve Daly´s quickly taken free kick. However‚ they were not enough to maintain Tivvy´s hold on the Team Talk Trophy‚ as the visitors recovered to snatch a 4 - 3 victory with goals from Eddie Akuamoah‚ scoring two‚ a tap in from Leworthy´s cross (63 mins) and a superb solo effort (66mins)‚ Geoff Pitcher (19mins) and scoring his first goal for Kingstonian‚ Phil Wingfield (23mins). "It was a cracking game‚ played at a fast and furious pace‚" said Martyn Rogers. "We certainly didn´t disgrace ourselves. To score three and perform like that against a non-league club of their calibre is very encouraging."
