Martyn Rogers’ ongoing experiment with the 4-4-2 system appears to be gathering pace, and on Tuesday evening he watched his team put in a spirited performance against a Torquay United side that boasted a mix of first-teamers returning from injury, youth players, and trialists.

Jamie Hatch scored twice against the club that rejected him in the summer, Ben Cleverley struck from a fine free kick, and Luke Cole scored a late fourth as Tiverton Town stunned their more illustrious rivals to take a 4-1 victory.

Hatch’s first goal of the evening came as he ran at the heart of the Gulls’ defence after fifteen minutes before firing in a low shot that had goalkeeper Martin Rice well beaten. It was Tivvy’s first dangerous attack of the game as the Yellows had been predominantly on the back foot yet solid in defence.

Cleverley doubled the advantage a couple of minutes before the break when he drilled in a free kick from the edge of the area.

And although Torquay pulled a scrappy goal back just after the hour through Saul Halpin the two-goal margin was restored thanks to a fine individual goal from Hatch.

The former Exeter City midfielder latched onto a misplaced pass inside his own half and raced through the heart of the Torquay defence, leaving Kieran Charnock trailing in his wake, before rounding Rice and squeezing the ball home from an acute angle.

In the final minute Luke Cole cut in from the left and rasped an unstoppable low shot into the far corner, giving Rogers and his players something to smile about after a disappointing start to the competitive season.

But the biggest smiles were amongst the sparse crowd. They watched with a quiet inner satisfaction as Hatch celebrated his goals as if they had just helped his team win the FA Cup. And Luke Cole joined in the exuberance by taking a leaf out of the Julius Agahowa school of Double-back-flip-somersault-with-pike by acrobatically celebrating his first goal in Tivvy colours. He nailed the landing too!
