With relegation already confirmed following the shutout against Halesowen two days earlier Tiverton travelled to Bashley with a weight lifted from their collective shoulders and the team selection was one that had Thursday’s Devon Cup final in mind. Both Michael Nardiello and Joe Bushin sat out the game with Adam Mortimer given a rare start alongside Jules Emati-Emati up front.

Tivvy were the more lively side in the first half and twice Ian Sampson got in behind Chris Ferrett only to fail to hit the target when one-on-one with David Elm. Sampson’s first chance came on eighteen minutes as he raced onto Ryan Leonard’s diagonal ball, but with Ferrett in his wake the Town winger was only able to smash his shot into the side netting. And a few minutes from half time a similar move ended when Ferrett recovered to block at the last moment, and Sampson took a blow to his head under the challenge, meaning he would not take to the field after the break.

Bashley were not without their chances in the first half, the best falling to Mark Gamble as he latched onto a smart ball over the top from Dave Allen. But Gamble flashed his shot across the face of goal, while Tom Hill and Chris Mason both narrowly missed the target and Ryan Draper saved well from another Gamble chance.

Bushin replaced the dazed Sampson at the start of the second half, and Tiverton struggled to match their first half performance with Bushin looking lost wide on the right flank. However, it was the makeshift winger that had the best opportunity to break the deadlock only to shoot wide from close range after Bashley had twice failed to clear Leonard’s corner.

And soon after Bashley took the lead when Allen bulleted in a near post header from Tom Hill’s corner, a lead that they had worked hard to earn in the early part of the second half, and one which they would seldom look like surrendering thereafter.

In fact there was little goalmouth action at either end for the final half and hour and the highlights of the game in the closing stages were yellow cards for Kevin Hill and then Nardiello, an unused substitute who was summoned to the attention of the referee after barracking the linesman.

Tom Hill missed a glaring chance in added time to secure the points when he plated a far post cross the wrong side of the upright when it looked easier to score, but the miss mattered little as Bashley completed their season half way down the table as Tivvy rounded off a disappointing league season with another defeat.
