On Friday evening we should have been at Dawlish but Dawlish should have paid their bills and didn’t so pulled out, leaving Tiverton with a hastily arranged game against Peninsula League side Stoke Gabriel, a side that play in the same Division Tivvy had hoped the new reserve team would be competing in. Stoke also boasted former Tiverton midfielder Kevin Wills amongst their ranks alongside, perhaps tellingly, a number of former Dawlish players.

For the first half of the first half Tiverton dominated. Alex Faux saw a header well saved, Mark Newbold made a fine goal-line clearance to deny Ryan Turner, and finally Michael Nardiello opened the scoring with a consummate penalty after Lloyd Clarke had leant on trialist Rory Prendergast. But just five minutes later the visitors were back on level terms as Wills jinked around on the edge of the area, made himself some space and then planted a left-footer beyond Chris Wright.

However, even ahead of the interval there were signs that fitness was key as Tiverton scored twice in the last five minutes of the first half. Turner’s persistence in midfield made Tivvy’s second, and once possession was regained Peter Knox took it forward, rounded goalkeeper Matt Congdon and squeezed the ball home. And then Predergast intercepted, piled forward and leathered in a fine shot from the edge of the area for 3-1.

Having caught their breath a little Stoke Gabriel looked better for a while in the second half and Danny Broadway pulled a goal back by nodding home Jamie Horn’s teasing cross from the left. Broadway then spurned a glorious chance to equalise as Wright saved one-on-one, leaving Joe Bushin to notch his first goal of the summer towards the end of the game, a close range header that gave the final 4-2 score a better reflection on the game as a whole.
