Cullompton Rangers 2 - 8 Tiverton Town

Tuesday 11/12/2001   Testimonial
John Reidy

As you leave Tiverton and head out over the hills towards Cullompton you climb a rise (understatement) known as Newts Hill. A hundred yards up the slope there is a turning off to Ash Thomas and Brithem Bottom‚ complete with finger signpost. That direction indicator is inscribed with the legend Cullompton 4 Tiverton 1. I have trawled through Kerry Miller´s History of Tiverton Town but am unable to find that result ever having occurred so assume that it must be some kind of misguided prediction‚ perhaps from a misty Crystal Ball.
Tuesday evening´s game between the two clubs‚ however‚ was not about the scoreline. It was a tribute to a loyal servant of Rangers‚ and one time wearer of the Yellow shirt of Town‚ Duncan Floyde. Few players stay loyal to any club for ten years. It is easier to do when the club has its fair share of success. To spend a decade at a club that seldom hits the heights is a worthy achievement and Tiverton Town and their fans were happy to make the hop across the Mid Devon hills to play their part in honouring a man that has done just that.
Four ´pyramid´ steps separate the two sides and with Tivvy doing Duncan the honour of fielding a full first team squad it was hardly surprising that they dominated proceedings. Despite the best efforts of the Rangers defence they were unable to offer Julian Stocker between their posts much protection. From the seventh minute when Kevin Nancekivell scored at the second attempt‚ the first being beaten out by Stocker‚ it was one way traffic. Antony Lynch added a second five minutes later and Richard Pears then added his name to the list after Marcus Gross had broken down the right four minutes further on. Another four minutes passed and Lynch added his second when through ´one on one´ on the keeper. On the thirty-sixth minute Lynch completed his hat-trick with the strike of the evening. David Steele chased long into the left hand corner‚ sent over a low cross and Lynchie hit a first time volley that rocketed into the net. Two minutes later Kevin Nancekivell chased down the left‚ cut in before sending a short cross into the goalmouth that Richard Pears flicked neatly over the line to bring the first half scoring to an end. Changes were made for the second half. Marker was replaced by Steele. Yes‚ Hedley was back in a Tivvy shirt and looking just as at home as he ever was. Steve Peters was on‚ as was Jamie Mudge and Phil Everett. Lynch added his fourth three minutes after the interval but it was Cully that provided the next strike‚ Darren Pengelly forcing the ball home. Phil Everett then got his name on the score sheet but it was to be the last Yellows goal. With seconds to go‚ veteran Mark Seatherton added a second for Rangers in a final effort to warm an well entertained if slightly chilled crowd.

Tiverton Town: Paul Edwards‚ Steve Winter‚ Neil Saunders‚ Marcus Gross‚ Nicky Marker‚ Scot Rogers‚ Kevin Nancekivell‚ Richard Pears‚ Anthony Lynch‚ David Steele‚ Paul Chenoweth‚ Hedley Steele‚ Steve Peters‚ Phil Everett‚ Jamie Mudge.
