Tiverton Town 7 - 1 Pershore Town

Saturday 21/08/1999   FA Cup

What started out as a poor and frustrating game changed at the interval to become a tremendous display with a feast of goals‚ and Kevin Smith´s club record of 303 goals equalled. The first half promised more than it delivered as Tivvy had the majority of the possession‚ but could not penetrate a resolute Pershore defence. Attempts on target were few‚ lacking in imagination and cohesion.
The second half‚ however‚ was a very different story. From the start Tivvy looked much more dangerous as they upped a gear‚ this time taking the game to Pershore with a sense of purpose. It took Tivvy just 6 minutes to make their dominance count as Richard Pears side footed the ball inside the near post from a superb Pete Conning´s left wing cross. Tivvy by now had the bit between their teeth as‚ on 59 minutes‚ Steve Ovens clinically finished after being put through by Steve Daly. With Phil Everett now on for Steve Ovens and Pete Varley for Kevin Nancekivell‚ Tivvy´s shape and movement looked better and it was no surprise when six minutes later‚ Steve Daly again in the action‚ converted a 20 yard free kick‚ bending the ball to the right and round the Pershore wall. The keeper got a hand to it but couldn´t stop it going into his top right hand corner. One minute later‚ Richard Pears got his second goal and Tivvy´s fourth. Put through by the ever present Steve Daly‚ he took the ball in his stride and as the keeper came out‚ cooly slotted the ball to his left to plant it in the bottom left hand corner.
Phil Everett equalled Kevin Smiths record goal tally of 303 when on 75 minutes Pete Varley‚ who surely made a strong case for inclusion in the starting eleven‚ collected from a Phil Everett nod down at the half way line put through a superb return pass to Phil‚ who‚ not having to adjust his pace‚ cooly and confidently blasted the ball past the keeper. One minute later it was Steve Daly who got himself on the score sheet for the second time when he picked up an excellent pass from Richard Pears and placed the ball perfectly past the outstretched keeper and into the bottom right hand corner. On 82 minutes it was Pete Conning this time who got himself on the score sheet‚ getting Tivvy´s seventh with a tremendous shot from 30 yards that went as straight as a die into the top right hand corner of a peppered Pershore goal.
Pershore did claim a consolation goal for their persistence with 5 minutes remaining. An unpressured Paul Tatterton‚ making his only error of the game‚ lost possession to Pershore´s Adam Ward who passed to Chris Thomas to calmly slotted past Paul Edwards.
Line up: Edwards‚ Blamey‚ Saunders‚ Tatterton‚ Tallon‚ Conning‚ Nancekivell‚ Ovens‚ Daly‚ Pears‚ Rogers.
Subs: Everett (Ovens 64)‚ Varley (Nancekivell 66)‚ Richardson (Blamey 69).
