Tiverton Town 1 - 1 Rocester

Saturday 28/08/1999   Southern League First Division
Nigel Davis

Although Tivvy extended their unbeaten run to 19 league and cup games they will be dissapointed that they were not able to collect all three points from this game. That´s not to deny that Rocester made it very hard for Tivvy. They were a hard working and organised unit‚ but Tivvy could and should have done better. It was a frustrating game for Tivvy. Stuart Smith leaving the pitch in the opening minutes with a recurring hamstring problem meant that yet again we had to reshuffle. This time Steve Ovens dropped back to the right wing back position to have his space filled by Phil Everett. Although Steve filled the role admirably it did affect the shape and rhythm of the game as did the constant punctuating of the referees whistle for what on the most part seemed petty reasons.
It was Rocester who opened the scoring in the 35th minute when a near post corner was flicked on for Chris Rawlinson to head home unmarked. The goal injected a little more urgency into Tivvy´s game with Phil Everett having the best chances to equalise. However‚ it was Richard Pears who scored the equaliser just before half time with an excellently worked goal that saw him hit home at the far post from an inch perfect low cross from Steve Daly. Tivvy were now flying as Darren Tallon watched his powerful header go just over as the untimely half time whistle went.
The second half continued much as the first with both teams cancelling each other out. Kevin Nancekivell‚ who´s excellent workrate was just shaded by the pea in the ref´s whistle‚ beat the Rocester keeper only to see his attempt cleared off the line.
Line up: Edwards‚ Blamey‚ Smith‚ Saunders‚ Tallon‚ Conning‚ Nancekivell‚ Ovens‚ Daly‚ Pears‚ Rogers.
Subs: Everett (Smith 8)‚ Varley (Pears)‚ Richardson (Conning).
