Match report

Blakenall 1 - 0 Tiverton Town

Saturday 06/11/1999   Southern League First Division

Tivvy came away from the Midlands with nothing to show for all their hard work. It was a very frustrating game in which Tivvy dominated for long periods but were not allowed‚ to Blakenhalls credit‚ to create many scoring opportunities. Nothing should be taken away from Blakenhall´s performance‚ but Tivvy deserved a share of the spoils. For the second week in a row‚ Tivvy see a central defender receive a red card. This week it was Stuart Smiths turn to walk for‚ what some might say‚ was a rather harsh decision.
Tivvy started brightly with excellent approach work to create chances for both Steve Ovens and Phil Everett who were denied by Blakenall´s ´keeper‚ Matt Lowe. Blakenall´s goal came in the 15th minute when Ian Bennett latched onto long ball over the top and somehow got himself between two defenders on the byeline to stab home past Paul Edwards inside the near post. Following the goal‚ Tivvy maintained pressure throughout the first half with Phil Everett‚ Kevin Nanckivell and Steve Ovens all either going close or bringing out the best from ´keeper‚ Lowe.
Tivvy dominated for long periods in the second half without really creating any notable chances‚ except for the excellent Neil Saunders‚ who watched as his bending 20 yard shot was stopped again by Lowe. Tivvy made three substitutions and again went very close as Stuart Smith rose above everyone to head narrowly wide. Stuart Smith then was sent off for a challenge on Lowe outside the box. The challenge was firm but fair and contact was made with the ball. Lowe went down as if he had broken his leg. Stuart Smith got his red card whilst the ´keeper received treatment and the rest of the Tivvy team remonstrated with the ref. The keeper however‚ made a miraculous recovery to deny Steve Daly‚ holding the ball just under the cross bar.
Line up: Edwards‚ Richardson‚ Saunders‚ Tatterton‚ Tallon‚ Conning‚ Nancekivell‚ Varley‚ Ovens‚ Daly‚ Everett.
Subs: Rogers (Conning 66)‚ Smith (Tatterton 84)‚ Vinnicombe (Ovens 65).
