Redditch United 1 - 2 Tiverton Town

Saturday 11/03/2000   Southern League First Division
Nigel Davis

Tivvy overcame a hard lumpy pitch‚ high wind and agri(cultural)? opposition in a game‚ it seemed‚ Tivvy were meant to win. Tivvy tried to construct their football‚ whilst Redditch tended to favour the long ball and an over-physical approach. Both goals‚ by Tivvy´s standards were soft‚ but nevertheless were more than earned by their shear hard work and will to win. After falling behind to a 12th minute goal by Redditch´s Paul Moore‚ Tivvy equallised on 29 minutes when Kevin Nancekivell´s shot was deflected and looped over the stranded ´keeper. Tivvy sealed the win on 66 minutes when Dominic Richardson´s shot was redirected past a helpless ´keeper by the impressive Scott Rogers.
Redditch started brightly and took a 12th minute lead when Paul Tatterton´s clearance rebounded off the legs of a Redditch player. The rebound wrong footed all except Redditch´s Paul Moore‚ who ran towards Tivvy´s goal unchallenged‚ checked Paul Edwards before slotting the ball home from 12 yards. Redditch had the chance to increase their lead 10 minutes later when Micky Moore was found in space on the edge of the six yard box‚ but his effort was well saved by Paul Edwards.
Tivvy gradually began to exert themselves and it was no surprise when Kevin Nancekivell equallised with what was a slightly fortunate goal. His shot was deflected off a defenders outstretched leg and looped wickedly over the stranded and desperately back peddling ´keeper to fall just inside the cross bar.
Kevin Nancekivell almost put Tivvy in front shortly after the break when his fierce shot was turned around the post by the Redditch ´keeper. This was to be the mark of Tivvy´s intent as they dominated the second half. Tivvy were now creating some good goal scoring opportunities. Phil Everett´s near post shot just scraped the wrong side of the far post and Dominic Richardson´s shot just wide of the same post.
Redditch´s Mark Smith almost put them ahead when his well hit 25 yard dipping volley just clipped the crossbar. It was Tivvy‚ however‚ who got the next and decisive goal. Dominic Richardson attempted a speculative shot from 30 yards. The ball did not have the necessary pace‚ but with a little help from Scott Rogers‚ the ball was deflected past the Redditch ´keeper on 66 minutes.
Redditch pushed for an equaliser‚ but Tivvy had the chances to seal the game. So it was that Tivvy won the game with two angel assisted goals‚ but as Arnold Palmer once said " You know it´s funny‚ the harder I work the luckier I get".
Line up: Edwards‚ Richardson‚ Saunders‚ Tatterton‚ Marker‚ Conning‚ Nancekivell‚ Varley‚ Everett‚ Rogers‚ Smith.
Subs: Ovens (Varley 66)‚ Leonard (Smith 78)‚ Vinnicombe (Richardson 90)‚ .
