Tiverton Town continued their rich vein of form with a fine 1-0 victory at playoff chasing Banbury United. In what was almost a carbon copy of the previous match against Oxford City the victory was sealed in the closing stages when Joe Bushin capitalised on some ponderous defending to blast home a shot from the edge of the area.

The goal was Bushin’s eleventh for Tiverton in just thirteen starts since signing from Dawlish Town in October, and the striker’s form has helped propel the Yellows four places in the league standings in the past week, as well as into the next round of the League Cup.

Although Banbury enjoyed more of the play in the first half it was Tiverton that came closest to breaking the deadlock and Alex Faux was denied on eighteen minutes when his powerful first-time shot crashed against the underside of the crossbar.

Ten minutes later Banbury goalkeeper Joe Murrell had to be at his best to fend off a dipping shot from Bushin, and Jamie Hatch came close to opening his account for Tivvy only to nod Elliot Frear’s corner over the top.

At the other end Steve Book remained relatively untroubled, although he was forced into palming over a swerving Nathan Haisley shot from distance.

The home side tried to utilise their blistering attacking pace but too often ran into a stoic yellow defensive wall, and as the game wore on their tactics degenerated into one more of desperation than finesse.

Long balls forward were bread and butter for Nathan Rudge and Tom Gardner at the heart of the Tiverton defence, and on the two occasions that United did manage to force a shot on target Book saved without needing to move his feet, firstly denying Nabil Shariff and then Adam Learoyd. Declan Benjamin also wasted a good opportunity as he blazed a free kick well over the top from the edge of the area.

The decisive moment in the game came with seven minutes remaining when Book punted deep upfield and Bushin neatly turned his marker with a deft flick before racing through and firing the ball past the exposed Murrell.

Learoyd sent another low shot directly at the unflappable Book in the final minute of normal time, and even a generous five minutes of added time was not enough for a blunt and out of sorts Banbury side to threaten an equaliser.
