The last time we convened here at Ladysmead we were in the presence of playoff chasing Chippenham Town, and we were aiming to gain revenge for a 4-2 defeat at Hardenhuish Park a few weeks earlier. Chippenham may have still harboured aspirations of extending their season by a couple of games but a stoic and workmanlike Tiverton side didn’t do them any favours.

No favours were done for the supporters that desperately craved a few goals either. Having drawn 0-0 against Cambridge City and Hemel Hempstead Town on the previous two 3pm kick-offs at Ladysmead Chippenham became the third side to be thwarted and to thwart the Yellows, and unusually for meetings with the Bluebirds the talking points in terms on on-pitch action were few and far between.

Shaun Lamb had the first sight at goal for the visitors but his free kick, as powerful and accurate as it was, could not find a way past Steve Book in the Tivvy goal, and at the other end Alan Griffin was forced to put a Colin Marshall free kick behind for a corner, Griffin’s header only just missing his own goal with Ian Gill nowhere to be seen.

Shaun Benison, who would later have his afternoon and his season cut short when he ruptured a hamstring, sent a dipping shot over the bar, and Liam Head latched onto a through ball from Richard Pears on the stroke of half time but failed to test Gill.

It was more of the same – generally inane competition – in the second half with neither team seeming to be keen on taking risks in a match which both sides really needed to win for very different reasons. Mike Booth tucked Griffin’s teasing cross behind for a corner, and Luke Gullick planted a sitter the wrong side of the upright at the far post with twenty minutes remaining.

Joe Bushin twice sent headers goalwards, both times too weak to unduly concern Gill, and in the final minute, as Tivvy began to get on top of their opponents, Elliott Frear latched onto an Adam Mortimer flickon but saw Gill come rushing off his line to smother before the winger could get his shot away. And thus it ended goalless. It is becoming a bit of a theme.
