Tiverton’s New Year got off to a disappointing start at table-topping Truro City as they were made to pay for some sleepy defending, conceding three times from crosses, and failing to find the back of the net when they worked their own opportunities.

The Yellows’ pack was reshuffled due to illness, injury and suspension with Adam Faux sitting out the second and final game of his two-match ban while fellow defender Tom Gardner was ridden with flu and only able to take a place on the bench. Mark Saunders was also still short of full fitness and Liam Ellis started despite also feeling poorly.

In spite of the initial problems Tivvy started well and deservedly held their hosts for the first half an hour. Indeed, Kevin Hill came within a whisker of giving Town the lead but his solid header was impressively turned over the top by Martin Rice in the Truro goal.

But City aren’t top by accident and their decisive finishing proved the difference as they edged ahead after 30 minutes when Barry Hayles was allowed the freedom of the penalty area to guide a header past Ryan Draper and into the far corner of the net.

It was a lead that had gradually become more likely and just moments earlier Steve Adams had fired over, but Hayles made no mistake and despite being unmarked he still had a lot to do with the header that broke the deadlock from a left-sided corner.

Draper made three saves in quick succession as City pressed forward in search of a second before the break, denying Andy Watkins and twice keeping out Andrew Taylor. But it was Taylor that provided the second goal as he had the first, crossing from the right for Truro captain Marcus Martin to nod powerfully past Draper, again benefitting from some slack marking by the Yellows.

Tiverton were on top for the opening exchanges in the second half but Rice did well to save from Michael Nardiello when the Tivvy striker broke the offside trap, and at the other end Draper reacted smartly to save from Martin.

But with Tiverton committing more and more players forward and having switched to a three-man defence City substitute Scott Walker found space on the left and lifted in a delightful cross to the far post for Martin to ram home from close range.

Joe Bushin, on in place of Russell Jee, had a chance to reduce the deficit and give Tiverton a goal that their forward play deserved, but again Rice came up trumps when his defence left him exposed, making a fine save to keep his sheet clean.
