The next outing for Tiverton largely went against the positivity that has been built up over the past few weeks, and typically it was the ghost of players past that saw the Yellows beaten 2-1 at Willand Rovers. Former Yellows midfielder Perry Carpenter scored once in each half before Joe Bushin pulled a goal back midway through the second period.

Willand were well on top as Tivvy struggled to retain possession in the midfield, and the hosts high pressing could have led to Dean Stamp twice opening the scoring, but an early shot zoomed wide of Ryan Draper’s upright, and later the same player side-footed wide from Jake Wannell’s cross. But Carpenter evaded the offside trap to convert another Wannell centre from the right after quarter of an hour, and Willand were good value for a lead they retained comfortably through until the half time whistle.

And just five minutes after the restart that lead was doubled when Carpenter drifted a free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner following a foul by Kevin Hill on Khalid Badavi that might have actually been punished with a penalty as it appeared the malpractice occurred inside the area.

The second Willand goal finally sparked Tiverton into life, and although the Yellows only goal of the evening came from a goalkeeping error of sorts it was still ground out thanks to the determined effort of both Bushin and Harry Nodwell. Initially Bushin simply flicked on a long ball out of defence, but nodwell reacted smartly to force Lloyd Bach into under-hitting a backpass to goalkeeper Brian Cann, and Cann then reacted slowly, allowing Nodwell to challenge. Bushin piled forward in anticipation and was on hand as the ball squirmed loose to roll it into an empty net from the edge of the area.

The closing third of the game saw Tiverton looking more incisive in the middle areas and Michael Nardiello offered a little extra guile up front but there were seldom any clear chances to draw level, other than a header from David Steele from Nodwell’s corner and a decent snapshot from Alex Gray that was palmed over the top by substitute goalkeeper Zac Lee.
