Tivvy started brightly with Andy Taylor spraying the ball around and Paul Kendall immense in defence. Taylor came closest to scoring after 14 minutes when he fired in from way outside the box, causing Michael Poke to tip the ball over for a corner.

It was a very even contest, played in an exhibition style, and certainly difficult to know which was the senior team.

Martin Ling’s approach to the game was to field two different Torquay elevens for each half but an injury to Joe Oastler on the half hour forced a rethink and on came Daniel Leadbitter in the 32nd minute. Four minutes later, Tivvy’s attractive close passing game broke down in the middle of their half when Joe Bushin was left with too much to do to prevent the ball from falling into opposition hands and, in a blink of an eye, Ashley Yeoman pounced to fire home the opener, leaving Chris Wright clutching thin air. Rene Howe then came close to adding to Torquay’s tally seconds before the interval but his swivel and shot saw the ball flash inches wide.

With wholesale changes from Torquay, the fear was that Tivvy would struggle against the fresh legs but, if anything, they looked just as fit as their hosts. However, Torquay always looked like scoring and, six minutes after the break, Lloyd Macklin outstripped the Tivvy defence but Wright came out and smothered well.

On 58 minutes he excelled again with two blocks in quick succession to deny Ryan Jarvis and then Macklin. Jarvis was again unlucky on 72 minutes when his shot came back into play off the near post and, with Wright having dived in an effort to save it, he was stranded when Danny Stevens followed up to cannon the ball in off the far post.

Wright was in the action again seven minutes from time to tip a Macklin shot over but Tivvy came close to pulling one back when Jules Emati-Emati’s curling shot left Martin Rice glued to the spot, only for the ball to miss the far post by a whisker.
