Tiverton’s opponents were chosen to offer a stern test just two weeks from the beginning of the new season but off-field madness had denied Truro City of all of their senior players so it was left to the Reserves plus a couple of trialists to make up the numbers, and although they held the game at 0-0 throughout the first half the visitors were significantly the weaker team.

So big was the gulf in class that perhaps too often Tivvy found a tendency towards overplaying; it was too easy in deep positions so the advanced players saw a lot of the ball and perhaps tried a few things that they wouldn’t have in a more competitive environment.

Russell Jee should have scored in the eighth minute but failed to hit the target, City goalkeeper Luke Payne rose superbly to pluck a teasing cross from Jules Emati-Emati, and Harry Nodwell rattled the woodwork from well outside the area. And Payne ensured the game remained tied with good saves from Joe Bushin and then on the stroke of half-time from Emati-Emati. AT the other end – nothing.

It took seven minutes for the Yellows to finally find a way through and the impressive David Steele, who became more and more influential as the game wore on was the architect. His driving run and cross perfectly found Bushin at the far post, Bushin’s header back across goal left Payne stranded.

Payne saved from Steele, Nodwell narrowly missed with an audacious forty-yard lob, and midway through the second period Bushin scored again, once more from a left-sided cross, this time on the volley to convert Nodwell’s centre.

Five minutes later two became three when Liam Ellis, on in place of Josh Concanen, skipped clinically past his man and lifted up a cross which Emati-Emati headed home with purpose.

Tivvy were cruising and took their collective eyes off the ball long enough for Kiefer Moore to pull a goal back, released by Adam Williams, initially denied by Chris Wright but on hand to belt in the rebound. And so it ended, maybe a little too casual for Tivvy but better than training!
