Tiverton Town 4 - 3 Wimborne Town

Saturday 03/12/2016   Southern League First Division

3 April 2014 saw Tiverton Town draw 4-4 with Wimborne Town at Ladysmead, and two and a half years later the same result was nearly on the cards again. Tiverton, however, on 3 December 2016 beat the Dorset side 4-3 with a hat-trick from in form striker Levi Landricombe and a goal from Tom Bath.

The match got off to a bad start for Tiverton - with only a minute on the clock Luke Holmes managed to wriggle free from the Tivvy defence and arrow a low shot to the right-hand corner of Joe Perry’s goal and put the visitors 1-0 up. Tivvy, however, started to get a grip on the game in the next ten minutes and it was no surprise when Jamie Price set up Levi Landricombe on 15 minutes to toe poke the ball past an on rushing Gerard Benfield to equalise. However, this seemed to spur on Wimborne who took the lead again on 23 minutes when Dan Cann fired in a cross/shot that somehow beat Tiverton’s keeper Perry, this time to his left-hand side with a slight deflection on the way.

That man Landricombe had other ideas and on 25 minutes latched onto an exquisite through ball from Jamie Short to lob the Wimborne keeper from 20 yards out to equalise for the second time in the match. Tom Gardner’s 500th appearance, meanwhile, was cut short by a knee injury on 28 minutes and he went off to a round of applause from both sets of fans, and was replaced by Steve Kingdon. The goal of the game came on 34 minutes when Landricombe completed his hat-trick and notched his 19th league goal of the season by curling a sumptuous free kick over the Wimborne wall and into top right corner of the goal at the Devco end.

To the credit of Wimborne, they came out firing in the second half and this time it was their turn to equalise on 65 minutes. With Tivvy looking to get a two goal cushion a counter attack by the visitors had Perry scrambling to keep out a low shot but he only managed to push the ball out straight to Toby Holmes who had the easiest of opportunities to score and he duly obliged from five yards out. This stirred the Tivvy front line and this time it was not Landricombe but Tom Bath, who was lively throughout the match, to race through the Wimborne defence and cheekily put the ball through Gerard Benfield’s legs to make it 4-3 to Tiverton in the 66th minute.

Surely that score line on the 3 April 2014 was not going to be repeated, and this proved to be the case as the Tivvy defence held firm in the remaining 24 minutes to claim the three points and continue with their promotion push.
