Tiverton Town 2 - 1 Slimbridge

Saturday 17/12/2016   Southern League First Division

Tivvy finished their 2016 home league campaign with a hard fough but well deserved three points against a spirited Slimbridge side, after falling behind as early as the ninth minute, goals from Levi Landricombe and Player of the Month for November and eventual Man of the Match Owen Howe secured the win in only the third ever meeting between the two sides.

Adam Mace gave the visitors their early lead, collecting Marley Thomas's square ball and his accurate drive nestled nicely in the corner, only minutes after Steve Kingdon headed Joe Stokes dangerous centre over his own crossbar, and Stokes should have doubled their advantage less than a minute after Mace had scored. Stokes was clean through on goal with just Joe Perry to beat which he duly did, only he scuffed his shot which allowed Michael Landricombe the time to race back and clear, as golden an opportunity as they could have wished for and one which they were punished for not taking.

It is almost impossible to write a match report without mentioning Levi Landricombe or Owen Howe lately, their 35 League goals one of the main reasons the Yellows will be guaranteed to finish 2016 in the play-off places. Levi drew the sides level just after the quarter hour mark, his close range acrobatic volley finding the roof of the net after brother Michael had leapt highest to meet Jamie Short's delivery for his 21st, and Owen Howe's 14th would eventually seal the win.

Swans full back Ryan Thwaite was fortunate, to say the least, to only see his afternoon ended early by his withdrawal rather than a dismissal for two robust tackles on Short, while Rob Norrish was also fortunate to see his tackle on Thomas only result in a caution as referee Martin Underhay did little to maintain control, which only went on to incense players and management from both sides.

Man of the Match Owen Howe had already seen a goal chalked off, Levi Landricombe flagged offside although the ball clearly fell to him from a Slimbridge defender and as Howe raced through on goal again, Swans goalkeeper Peter Davies blocked his effort outside of his area, with players and fans convinvced with the use of a hand, the referee was uninterested but with 10 minutes remaining Howe arrowed a rocket of a left foot shot in to the far corner from a tight angle after Landricombe's shot had deflected into his path. Slimbridge pressed for an equaliser in the minutes that remained, to no avail and succumb to a third straight league defeat.
