Back-to-back three nil defeats in the space of forty-eight hours on the road for the Yellows, not exactly the best way to end the old or start the new year, on the back of a four-nil defeat in the previous away trip makes pretty grim reading when it comes to discussing current form and it was the manner of the latest defeat though that left a sour taste in the mouths of the travelling fans and doubtlessly the staff and players. That said though, had anyone mentioned at the start of the season that Tivvy would occupy a play-off place come the start of the new calendar year, arms would have been bitten off and it is rightly an achievement to be proud of.

Changes to the line-up, one enforced due to the injury picked up by Nick Hurst at Royston and others with the idea of giving fresh legs a run out, seemed to make perfect sense and the early signs were encouraging. Jamie Short fired wide as early as the sixth minute after one of his trademark, lung-busting runs forward, Magpies centre half Callum Rose did brilliantly to head away Levi Landricombe’s fierce effort and from the resulting corner, keeper Chris Weale produced an outstanding save to deny Jamie Price after his goal bound effort took a sizeable deflection, before Sam Lanahan headed the hosts in front on twenty-three minutes in their first real menacing attack, after Magpies Man of the Match Kyle Egan was allowed time and space to pick out his man. Tom Bath completely miskicked in front of goal as the Yellows looked for an instant reply and re-assert their early authority, but only a fine Tom Gardner block and wayward shooting thwarted the hosts in their attempts to add to the lead before the interval.

Tom Blair replaced Phil Ormrod at half time for the hosts and the replacement took no more than ninety seconds to have an impact on the match, granted with a huge slice of help from Martin Rice, who dropped a routine catch at the feet of said forward and he was left with the simple task of tapping home number two with his first touch. Rogers gambled ten minutes later, making a triple substitution just after Rice had gone someway to redeeming himself with an excellent point blank save before the afternoon got even worse, again Blair on target with another close-range header after another pin-point delivery from Egan.

Tivvy huffed and puffed for a way back in to the match; Jared Lewington almost reduced the arrears and opened his account with a smart header but their afternoon was summed up perfectly when with five minutes remaining, the normally lethal and prolific Levi Landricombe raced through on goal and with only Weale to beat he blazed high, wide and not very handsome.
