Tiverton Town reached the 2nd round Qualifying of the FA Cup for only the second time in the last nine years. Their opponents on a chilly September day were Toolstation Premier team Bridport F.C who had previously beaten Hallen 5-0 away in the last round. The day was all about milestones with Levi Landricombe notching his 100th career goal for Tiverton Town and Martyn Rogers recording his 700th win as Tiverton Towns manager. The bonus for the Devon side was the prize money of £6,000 for winning in Dorset and the chance of a further £9,000 if Tiverton manage to progress further in the competition.

The early pressure was from Tiverton playing from left to right from the dug-out side and they were keen to build upon their impressive performance against Beaconsfield the previous Saturday. Levi Landricombe was linking up well with Tom Bath and there were some hefty challenges put in from the Bridport players that the referee somehow managed to miss. The first clear cut chance fell to Tom Bath on 21 minutes when the impressive River Allen who always thinks two paces ahead of his opponents put in a glorious cross and Tom Bath put his header just the wrong side of Jason Hutching’s post. The Bees responded with Oscar Latas running at the Tivvy defence and crossing for Leighton Thomas, but he just couldn’t find the finish. Bridport again tested the Tivvy back line and from a resulting corner Liam Armstrong did well to put the cross behind under immense pressure from the Bridport attack for yet another corner. The best chance of the game then came on 29 minutes when Tom Bath did well down the right flank and pulled the ball back for Levi Landricombe but from eight yards out he pulled the trigger first time and put the ball high over the bar. On 42 minutes however, there was no stopping a twenty-yard thunderbolt from Levi Landricombe that arrowed its way into the bottom left hand corner of Jason Hutching’s goal giving him no chance. The goal was Levi Landricombe’s 100th goal in 131 appearances for the Yellows and no doubt there will be many more to come.

The second half saw Tiverton sit deep and look to soak up the Bridport pressure. This was a dangerous game to play as Bridport gave it a real go to force at least a replay at the “Ian Moorcroft Stadium Ladysmead” First there was a bad miss when Bridport captain Mark Salter on 47 minutes blazed over the bar when he was clean through. Tiverton responded with a lovely move on 49 minutes resulting in a Levi Landricombe cross that Tom Bath narrowly managed not to bundle over the line. Man of the Match Liam Armstrong then denied Mark Salter again with Bridport looking likely to grab an equaliser. Martyn Rogers made a double substitution on 68 minutes with Ethan Phillips and Jordan Rogers coming on for Callum Hall and Tom Bath. Tivvy were looking to hold the ball up better and to win the midfield battle. The Bees kept going and were awarded a free kick on 77 minutes, after a deflection the ball fell nicely for Lee Sweet but he skewed his shot wide of the Tivvy goal.

With five minutes to go Levi Landricombe had a one on one with Jason Hutchings but the keeper got down well to save. Bridport looked to have salvaged a draw when a great shot came through a group of players but Liam Armstrong who is surely destined for a bright future in league football somehow managed to get a hand onto the ball and keep it out. There was somehow eleven minutes of added on time before the referee eventually ended proceedings. Bridport who are 52 places below Tiverton in the pyramid can be proud of their efforts and Tiverton will be pleased to come away from the beehive with the victory and the prize money in the bag. Tiverton always seem to play better against teams higher up the pyramid but today was all about the result not the performance.

Tiverton will be looking forward to the draw on Monday to see who we play in the next round. Fingers crossed it’s a home tie.
