Tuesday 29/10/2019   FA Trophy

As ding-dong cup ties go, with it being more of a spectacle for the neutral rather than that of either set of fans, it was a great match and a brilliant advert for the non-league game. From a defensive point of view though, neither side will have been particularly happy with that aspect of their respective performances and for the second game in a row, the Yellows conceded three away from home. Twice the Yellows led by two goals but credit to Yate, who won two nil at Ladysmead two weeks prior, as they battled back to earn another shot a progressing to the second qualifying round and a replay at Ladysmead on Wednesday 9th November.

The Yellows were two up with ten minutes on the clock as Jared Lewington fired the first of his brace from a tight angle and Jordan Bastin added the second with a crisp finish after Luke Mortimore, who made his first start since re-joining, had found him with a precise cross and all seemed relatively rosy. Yate to their credit had other ideas though and deservedly reduced the deficit to one on thirty three minutes as Nick Peare curled home a fine effort and only the frame of the goal and a couple of excellent Lewis Williams saves denied them an equaliser before the break. Jared Lewington then restored the two goal cushion just before the hour mark, heading home a Josh Key cross from close in before the hosts earned a replay with goals from Sam Kamara and Louis Britton.

Lewis Williams was the first of the two goalkeepers called in to action as a long range effort from Louis Britton almost caught him too far off his line but he managed to back-pedal quickly enough to tip the shot over before his opposite number and the hosts Man of the Match Adam Forsters` first real involvement was to pick the ball out of his own net. River Allen played a great ball in to the left channel and Lewington raced on to it, rounded Forster and despite the best efforts of a back-tracking defender, fired home from a tight angle with just seven minutes gone and Forsters second involvement, three minutes later, was exactly the same. This time Mortimore was sent clear down the Yellows right and his accurate cross was hammered home, through the legs of Forster, by the on-rushing Jordan Bastin.

Back came the hosts though and eventually reduced the arrears with a fine curled effort from the edge of the area on thirty three minutes from captain Nick Peare, after he had rattled an upright with a vicious shot minutes earlier and despite both sides creating great chances to score before the interval, including Bastin missing a sitter from close in after Man of the Match Josh Key had crossed from the right, the score remained two-one to the Yellows. The hosts started the second period as they had ended the first but were eventually undone by a piece of brilliance from Key just before the hour mark. His mazy run down the right took him to the byline and his delightful cross gave Lewington the simplest of chances and he duly obliged, heading home his second and the Yellows third of the night from close in.

The goal of the night was next up, just three minutes later, as the hosts quickly reduced the deficit to one again as Sam Kamara curled home a brilliant effort from thirty yards that Williams would have needed a step ladder and a fortnights notice to get anywhere near and with twenty minutes left to play the comeback was complete as Louis Britton was sent clear, he rounded Williams and tapped the equaliser into the unguarded net. Both sides continued to find holes in their opponents defences as the match wore on, Britton off target with just Williams to beat and only an outstanding save from Forster denied Smerdon what would surely have been the winning goal with just two minutes of the ninety left to play.
