Merthyr 1 - 1 Tiverton Town

Tuesday 07/02/2006   Southern League Premier Division
Smudge

Gale force winds & driving rain throughout made conditions difficult for both sides ‚ but that was nothing compared to the officials who clearly cost Tiverton all three points tonight.
Merthyr won the toss and elected to play against the strong wind .

Tiverton made one change from last Saturday as Danny Clay was allowed to return to Exeter after his second loan period expired ‚ Bale dropped back to midfield and Richard Pears was recalled to partner Jamie Mudge.

Tiverton started very strongly and pinned Merhtyr in their half with Pears prominient

After 7 mins Mudge made a typical jinking run and crossed into the box ‚ Davies who was linking up with him fell over in the box ‚and the ball ran to Chris Holloway who scored from close range

Elation turned to dismay ‚ Mudgie was down holding his leg ‚eventually he was helped off the pitch with what appears to be a torn hamstring .

On came Nogan to partner Pears ‚ thankfully the two of them set out to prove their doubters wrong after their poor performances against Cirencester & Bedford ‚ and linked up well creating a couple of chances for Pears that went narrowly over the bar

Tiverton continued to press and from a deep corner Tom Gardner appeared to overstretch and within a few minutes was replaced by Sam Croft on 19mins

Two minutes later Davies was badly fouled and took some time for treatment but managed to resume

Nogan had a glorious chance to to put Tiverton ahead but from ten yards his shot hit the bar ‚ and the rebound fell to him and was blocked on the line by a defender and the danger was cleared.

Halftime and Mark Ovendale hadn´thad to make save‚ but Tiverton now had to face the strong wind & rain and surely Merhyr would drive home the advantage

Tiverton started off how they finished the half positive & direct and tried to keep the ball on the ground ‚ unlike Merthyr which all the game was route one

Chris Bale was played into space buy Nogan and his shot on target was brilliantly saved by Worgan

On 61mins the ball broke kindly for Keddle wide out on the left who hit a speculative cross into the box which eluded eveyone apart from Fowler who came in at the backpost to head past a stranded Ovendale
First and only attempt on target from Merthyr !!

Mehrthyr then had a period of greater possession and sent on there top scorer Steins(who has been out for the last six weeks) to play three up front ‚ but the final ball was always poor

Then came a period of in the game when the officials decided to take a leading role‚ a ball was played through to Pears who was quite clearly onside and he coolly slotted the ball home for a second goal‚ only for the linesman to flag as the ball hit the
back of the net presumably for offside
Tiverton players protested and Chris Holloway got himself booked

5 mins later Nogan played a great ball to Pears in space ‚ who chipped the keeper from 15 yards out only to see the ball go just wide of the upright

Tiverton continued to have the better of the game with Holloway and Bale prompting from midfield when Pears played a defence splitting pass which saw Holloway challenge the keeper for a 50/50 the ball ran loose Holloway picked himself up and tucked the ball away from an acute angle Goal !!!!!

Not on your life same linesman decided to put his flag up (keeper was injured) Referee consulted him goal disallowed from where the free kick was taken we think it was given for offside ‚ quite were that came from only he & the referee know

In the ensuing melee Holloway must have swore at the linesman ‚out came the second yellow ‚ then red ‚ Tiverton down to ten men.
Ampadu limped off to be replaced by Hambly for the last 5mins or so

Final score one all

Considering the conditions our boys did us proud ‚ Ovendale did not have to make one save all night ‚ we have hit the bar ‚ had two perfectly good goals disallowed ‚ there keeper was easily their MOM .
On the negative side we have three key players injured ‚ and holloway will miss two games with suspension
